Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you are from the EU or not, here we have some answers for you.

EU Nationals

The answer is YES. In order to process the NIE in Barcelona you need to set up an appointment.

How? Registering at the official webpage.

When will I have the appointment for? It is unsure since it depends on the number of applications that the system receives at the same time.

Mostly YES. You can find a company who wants to hire you without a NIE. However, most employers prefer to offer a contract to an applicant who already has the NIE and the social security number in order to expedite hiring.

There are several ways to obtain a NIE if you don’t hold an employment contract. These are the following:

  • To prove that you are self-employed / autónomo.
  • To have sufficient financial resources not to need social assistance in Spain for the duration of your stay and to have subscribed a private health insurance.
  • To be a student in a public or private institution with a public or private health insurance.
  • To have a family member living in Spain under legal circumstances

You can, sometimes, if you’re lucky or doing a simple procedure. We understand not wanting to pay for something you can do on your own, so if that’s the case, we’ll let you know.

For everything else, it’s almost always more costly to do it by yourself if you have no experience or knowledge about the particular procedure, than hiring a lawyer in the first place. Having a lawyer also lets you rest easy, so you don’t have to worry about all the things you might not know.

Non-EU Nationals

If you are a national of a non-EU country  and you want to work in Spain, you need to apply for a work visa in your home country before coming to Spain

Timing is fundamental. In most cases, you will not be able to apply for the work visa once you are in Spain.

The answer is YES

If you are the relative of a EU citizen (direct relatives, ascendants and descendants) and you are accompanying or  joining him or her, you can live and work in Spain as if you were a resident.
